The Northern Lakes of Patagonia

Bariloche

When I think of cozy I imagine myself sitting on a very comfy couch, drinking a warm cup of coffee (tea or hot chocolate if you prefer) admiring a mountain lake through the window of a welcoming wooden cabin. This is how life can be around the lake region of Argentina.

San Martin de los Andes

The towns of San Martin de los Andes, Villa la Angostura and Bariloche all shared the same easy-going quality. Surrounded by the Andes mountains, dotted with clear blue lakes, these are very pleasant and relaxing places to spend time. One can enjoy many activities: hiking, catamaran day trips, bicycle rides, etc. They all benefit from the gorgeous views to the lakes and mountains.

San Martin de los Andes

In Bariloche, we visited Cerro Campanario, a famous lookout point. We took a short, but steep, 40 minute hike to the top (if you feel lazy you can take a chairlift). The peak was very cold and windy, but luckily there is a coffee shop where you can enjoy the stunning views for as long as you want. We both agreed that these views were among the best we have ever seen in our lives.

A must try is the delicious artisanal local beer and the amazing homemade chocolate.

We enjoyed our week of relaxing before heading to the far end of Patagonia to trek!

Fantastic photos and I’ll confess I’m envious it’s been a lifetime ambition to visit Patagonia – and I’ve never even gotten close (in fact I keep moving further away). Still I can dream that one day I’ll get there.

Your pictures are amazing! Are you headed to Calafate? Best of luck, you’re quite the adventurist.
